Apple Pie
When you pick 4lbs of apples at the orchards, you bake an apple pie with the whole family!
What you’ll need!
Dough:
1 1/2 cups flour
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
2 sticks cold cubed butter
6-8oz ice water
1 egg (for the egg wash at end)
Filling:
6-8 apples
2 tbsp flour
1 tbsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ginger
1/4 tsp nutmeg
3/4 cup sugar
THEN;
1. To make the crust, combine flour, sugar and salt in a food processor then pulse to combine. Next, add in the cubed butter and pulse until all ingredients are combined.
2. Add the dough mixture into a medium bowl. Slowly add in the cold water and fold using a spatula. Then place the dough on the table and shape it into a medium sized disc.
3. Place the dough in plastic wrap, sprinkle a little flour and put it in the fridge for 2 hours.
4. While the dough is chilling, begin to make the filling. Peel the apples then chop into medium slices.
5. Combine apple slices with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, sugar and flour in a large bowl. Mix until the apple slices are evenly coated.
6. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Remove the dough from the fridge and sprinkle your working surface with flour.
7. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough and use the pie pan as a template for the bottom crust layer. Once completed, carefully lift the dough up and add to the pie pan.
8. Add in apple pie filling to the pan. After, cut 10 one inch strips with the remaining dough.
9. Begin laying down 5 of the strips across the top of the pie. To create the lattice pattern, lift every other strip to weave in the remaining 5 strips in the opposite direction.
10. Trim off any excess dough and pinch down the dough along the rim of the pan.
10. Brush the top of the pie with an egg wash.
11. Place the pie pan on a baking tray and add into the oven. Bake for 45 minutes.
